Without Exception is a project that has been set up by professionals working in the UK music festival industry who are committed to making the industry a more diverse, equal and inclusive place to work. More information about the project can be found here.

We strongly believe that this project will only work if it is guided by individuals and organisations who bring a diverse set of perspectives and experiences. With this in mind, we have developed the model of an Advisory Group to ensure that the needs of a broad range of people are considered throughout our work.

We are looking to create a group made up of people from a range of diverse backgrounds who bring one or more of the following:

  • experience of working or volunteering at festivals

  • a broad interest in creating more diverse and inclusive workplace culture

  • expertise in HR with particular experience of diversity and inclusion

  • passion for the festival industry

This opportunity is open to people of any age or level of work experience, as the aim of the group is to capture a wide range of viewpoints.

If you have experienced barriers or discrimination in the festival industry as result of colour, ethnic background, gender or gender identification, sexuality, physical or mental disability, age, socio-economic background or for other reasons not detailed here, and you would like to work with Without Exception to address this, please complete the short form below.

The deadline for applications is midnight on Sunday 1st November 2020.

What is the role of an Advisory Group member?

The Advisory Group will help to steer development of Without Exception. Members will be asked to offer advice and guidance on current ideas for the project as well as feeding in their own suggestions to help shape the work that we do.

The current plan is that this group will meet remotely (e.g. via Zoom) once a month to discuss subjects including:

•  Agreeing scope of the Advisory Group

•  Short and long-term goals of the project

•  Structure of the project/organisation

•  Possible funding opportunities

•  Oversight of the language and content of any programmes or publications

•  Ensuring the project reaches members of diverse communities.

In addition to the monthly virtual meetings, we also hope that members of the group will be available for occasional phone calls with the team delivering the project and will utilise their existing networks to actively promote and gain wider input on the project as it develops.

What is not involved?

To be clear, we are not looking for a board of trustees, and no member of this group will hold any legal or financial liabilities or responsibilities. At this stage, the role of the Advisory Group is to share their input and ideas to guide the development of the project.

Is this a paid position?

This is currently an unpaid role as the project has not yet been given a formal structure and so has not yet sought funding. As a result, all elements of this project are currently being completed in a voluntary capacity. We acknowledge the challenges this presents in terms of sustainability and restricting who can engage with the project and this is a key issue we are looking to address in the coming months as the shape of the project is realised.

How will the work of the Advisory Group fit into the wider project?

Alongside this Advisory Group, we are also planning to build a Working Group, consisting of people interested in supporting the project by sharing their time or expertise. It will be up to the founders of the project and the members of this Working Group to carry out the agreed actions from the Advisory Group’s monthly meetings.

What level of commitment is expected?

We expect involvement in the Advisory Group to take up roughly 8 hours a month spread across a number of days. We are initially looking for this to be a short-term commitment of 6 months (November 2020-April 2021) to help with the early stages of setting up the project, with the potential to continue involvement after this.

How to get involved:

If you are interested in being a part of the Advisory Group for Without Exception, please complete the short contact form at the bottom of this page or email, telling us a bit about yourself and why you’d like to be involved in the project. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions at all about the role or the project in general.

To meet the aim of building a diverse group, it is vital that this opportunity is promoted as widely as possible. We encourage everyone to share this opportunity with your networks and on any relevant platforms. We are actively working to ensure this opportunity is promoted beyond our own networks and welcome any suggestions on how we can achieve this.
